Where the Brahmaputra Meets the Mississippi
A Vision For STEM Education In Assam
…and Minneapolis

Imagine a chemistry class without experiments. Imagine learning physics concepts with no demonstrations.

Many areas of the world learn by memorization: the result is students who can parrot a concept, but with little understanding of the how and why.

That will soon change in areas of Assam in Northwest India — thanks to a Rotary International Global Grant to support innovative, experiment-rich, hands-on STEM education for girls and training for teachers.

These students are the next generation of scientists, engineers, teachers and parents. Join the Minneapolis South Rotary Club in making a positive difference with young minds.

WHAT IS THE EVENT?
This evening will feature Indian food, a bazaar and Indian-related entertainment. All proceeds will go toward the STEM education project in Assam.

WHAT IS THE COST?
$15 to get in, with additional costs for food and bazaar items. Click here to buy tickets in advance. Sponsorships are also available. Contact Lynn at MplsSouthRotary@gmail.com for more information.

WHY ASSAM?
  • These schools lack access to quality teachers and students learn by rote
  • More than 70 percent of eighth graders are unable to do basic division
  • Teachers are not trained for hands-on ways of teaching through models and experiments
  • Teachers lack ways to make classes engaging and interesting
WHAT ABOUT MINNEAPOLIS?
  • Future plans for this project include connecting students in Assam and Minneapolis for collaborative, dynamic learning and idea exchange
HOW
This project has received major grant funding from The Rotary Foundation. This fundraiser will help cover the Minneapolis South Rotary Club’s financial obligation to the project.

SUSTAINABILITY
This project will create a network of trained teachers that will continue to teach and inspire other teachers with hands-on STEM learning. This program is also based on the successful Aavishkaar program, also Rotary-sponsored, in northwestern India.

OVERSIGHT
Per grant requirements, there will be close monitoring of finances by Rotary International as well as outcome monitoring. Accountable parties include the Minneapolis South Rotary Club, Rotary District 5950 and partner Rotary clubs in Assam.
